Fiber Beat, Episode 25: "Fiber Best 2011" featuring my media faves of 2011 ![]() There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. ![]() This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue Three featuring Margot Selby, Rachel Lawrence, Jacey Boggs and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio Hello everyone and Happy New Year! As the title of this episode suggests - today Iʼll be doing an overview of the books, ebooks and DVDʼs that I thought were standouts this past year. My top books (from number 10 to number 1) are:
My top E-books from (number 10 to number 1):
My top DVDs & Multimedia (in no particular order):
If I had to choose the one publication that simply slayed me, it would definitely be the Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook paired with the Handspinning Rare Wools DVD. Both of these gems were the product of a massive amount of research and writing from Deb Robson (F&FS/HRW) & Carol Ekarius (F&FS only). If you have the opportunity to acquire any of these pieces for your personal library, you will be most pleased. I encourage you to explore the book section of your local yarn store. If they don't have them, I bet they can order them for you. You might pay a bit more than ordering them online from a certain discount seller, but you'll be supporting a local economy & quite possibly make some new fiber friends in your own backyard. Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 25 For this episode we've got an awesome contest for amazing prizes. I've got (1) a signed copy of Stephen West's WestKnits Book One & Two, (2) a copy of 10 Secrets of Laidback Knitters by Lisa Souza and Vickie Steifel, (3) a copy of Knitter's Life List by Gwen Steege, (4) a copy of Maggie Casey's Getting Started on a Drop Spindle DVD AND (5) a copy of Beth Brown Reinsel's Knitting Ganseys DVD. All you have to do to enter is answer the following question. What are YOUR favorite media picks for 2011? They can be print, digital or video. You can give me as little or as much information as you like but be sure to include authors and/or publishers so we can get our own copies. You can leave your answer on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One unique winner for each of the five prizes will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS FEBRUARY 22, 2012. A warm hug to Rodrigo for letting me use some of his photographs from the "Ornaments & Patterns found in Iceland" book. Big shout out to Fiber Beat sponsor, Entangled magazine. Finally, the most rejuvenating hug to all of you, our loyal and patient listeners, for downloading and listening to our first THIRTY TWO episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat! - I "bought" or downloaded many of your top picks here, but will add:
1) digital magazine issue 1 (I think issue 2 is coming out soon) Textiles by Kate Davies http://textisles.com/textisles-2/
2) ebook/pattern collection by Anna Dalvi of "Knit & Knag" -- 10 shawl patterns AND extensive descriptions of different shawl shapes in pattern writing http://www.knitandknag.com/
... so enjoyed your picks and the comprehensive descriptions! - Hi Mike, first THANKS so much for that cool video! I really appreciate all the time you put into a high quality podcast! I need to go leave feedback for you on Itunes too. Thanks for the Storey Pub contest too WOW. http://www.storey.com/knitterslifelistsweepstakes.php
Books from last year, well I just found her last year but her books are older, Janel Laidman, WOW she's getting AWESOME. She's got the Knitterati pattern club this year and for $42 bucks you get into the club and get 12 patterns. http://janellaidman.com/clubs.html Her last club of socks were incredible. Ditto on the Alice Starmore I got that this year too! Oh and we bought the blueprint copy of the new Neibling search for the best price, they are called Folios....that were just released. We love lace here can't get enough so now I'm designing KALs (Yarn Fairy and The Pixies are in the house!). I keep thinking about getting Socktopied and haven't but your overview was nice and it's niggling harder now. That other one you mentioned from Co-operative... I can't remember now, will have to go look through again but you are an Evil Enabler bud! I'm getting published this year too. ;-) - Weirdly enough, I don't seem to have bought *any* knitting books in 2011---and embarrassingly enough, I haven't yet read the yarn-related books my mom gave me for Xmas 2010 (The Knitter's Book of Wool by Clara Parkes and Reversible Knitting by Lynne Barr). That means the only fiber-y book I dealt with in 2011 is one I co-edited: Crafting by Concepts. Thus, it will have to be my media pick.
By the way, there is another source for Ornaments & Patterns found in Iceland... Interlibrary Loan! There are a couple of US university libraries who hold it, so I'm hoping that one of them will be willing to part with it for a few weeks to lend it to me. - I went off to check my Ravelry library to see what I'd bought this year, and I found nothing from 2011. I did buy books last year, but they were mostly used or reprints. My fave of these would be Mostly Mittens: Ethnic Knitting Designs from Russia by Charlene Schurch. It was reprinted in 2009 by Martingale press.
- So many good picks there Mike - I agree with many (Knitters' Life List, Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook etc would be on my top list). Cat Bordhi's sock book is going to include some bonus patterns by the time it is done - she gives each purchaser about one more every month.
The only other thing I'd add to the list is the online classes/tutorials through craftsy.com. I'm taking the one by Stefanie Japel, Fit Your Knits. It's multimedia and great.
Thanks! (pick me, pick me!!!)
Melinda
