What is Fiber Beat? ~~
Fiber Beat is not your regular knitting podcast. In fact, it covers a range of crafts using the fiber medium, such as spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, shepherding, & crocheting. You can expect interviews with designers, authors, farmers, & businesses. WonderMike, editor-in-chief and intrepid reporter presents instructional video podcasts as well as product reviews. If you have a story, you'd like to share, give WonderMike a shout on Ravelry or leave a comment in the show notes!

Sponsoring Fiber Beat ~~
Fiber Beat is now accepting sponsorship. If you'd like to underwrite the show, please contact WonderMike who can give you rates and options.

Production Assistance ~~
Fiber Beat is a labor of journalistic love that requires considerable preparation, both before and after the actual interview. We use various audio/computer equipment to record, edit and publish each episode of the show. Your donations make this work possible. Thank you very much!!!

Fiber Beat, Episode 19: "Art is Primary" featuring Deborah Corsini and Kyle Kunnecke
(Media Link: Art is Primary (34:37))

Fiber Beat, Episode 19: Art is Primary

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

Entangled Magazine - new sponsor

This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue One featuring Claudia from Wollmeise, the history of Saori weaving, and all about Angora rabbit fiber is out now and available through Zinio

Bobbin's Nest Studio

This episode of Fiber Beat is also underwritten by Bobbin's Nest Studio, from Santa Clara, CA. Bobbin's Nest is a fabric and yarn store specializing in: knitting, sewing, crochet, and hand embroidery. This summer Bobbin's Nest will release a line of their own patterns AND will redesign the store! Come check out all the excitement in person!

When I was first told I should visit the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, I envisioned a meticulously displayed and tastefully curated collection of traditional quilted pieces. But, as this recommendation was coming from my multi-crafty poly-artistic friend, Kyle Kunnecke, I knew that there must be more edge to it than that. And boy was I in for a tasty textile treat!!!

For my first trip to the museum, I saw two side-by-side shows. The first show was "Eden Re-imagined" showcasing the embroidered art of Leo Chiachio and Daniel Giannone. The sister show in this exhibition was called "Earthly Paradise" and it was a dazzling display of quilted tapestries from the two-woman collective A Bee (aka Carrie Houseman and Darbury Novoselic).

These two shows were enough to convince me that the SJMoQ&T must have a passionate curatorial staff that I had to meet. Fortunately, I had an introduction (through my buddy Kyle) to Deborah Corsini, the visionary behind the first show that I experienced at the museum. My talk with Deborah is the subject of the first half of this episode of Fiber Beat. For the second half the show, I chatted with Kyle and about his workshops, his designs and his journey through the worlds of art, textiles & knitting

If you are fortunate enough to live in the San Jose/Bay Area, I encourage most strongly to go check out Primary Structures, the brand new show at the Museum of Quilts & Textiles featuring knitted and crocheted artwork. You can also sign up for workshops with Kyle & even check out the “Southwestern Banded Blankets” exhibit that is showing concurrently with the PS show.

The following people, places and things were mentioned:

  • I wish I could see the San Jose Museum show but sadly travel is not in the budget. I am glad to have heard about the show though. Sounds like a great museum and definitely a place to visit in the future. Kyle's patterns are wonderful. He certainly is inspiring. Thanks for another terrific show!

  • Just finished listening to the podcast. Sadly, I am too far away to see the exhibit but would love to have a copy of the show catalogue.

I've been talking to Kyle electronically for years and it was good to finally meet his voice.

  • Hi! I found your podcast by way of the Knit Circus interview. I have have created a great niche in podcasting; I truly enjoyed it. As serendipity would have it, I visited the San Jose Museum two years ago and saw the knitting exhibit you referenced. It was wonderful. Thanks again for this episode and such thorough show notes. They really add a classy touch.

  • A great podcast. I wish I was near San Jose so that I could attend Kyle's hat workshop and see the exhibit, but alas, 2000 miles is a slight barrier. I'd love to knit those hats.
