Welcome new listeners and now, VIEWERS, to our first Video Supplement to Fiber Beat. We're very impressed (and quite nervous) by the amount of work that goes into a video production. Don't forget about the very first Fiber Beat CONTEST I have the pattern for the Moccasin Sock by Elizabeth Zimmermann PLUS two skeins of Québécoise in navy blue & forest green to give away. All you need to do is tell us what what you have learned from Schoolhouse Press? To enter, please leave a comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. The winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS OCTOBER 30, 2009. I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say! A MASSIVE thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first episode of Fiber Beat. ETA: Several people have asked me about the spindles in the beginning shot (on the desk) and I'm listing them here:

- I just listened to the podcast, sent here by Sticks and String. I'll be listening again. I particularly like the less giddy and gossipy podcasts and only wish they were more frequent so I'd get more knitting done.
Wonderful opening show with Meg Swanson. It's going to be hard to top it. Congratulations. - I love Fiber Beat! I actually got all overwhelmed when you walked by me at Sock Summit, so much that I made a suppressed squeal. I'm a new knitter, but when I expressed an interest in knitting my boyfriend found every blog, podcast and website about knitting for me. So, he asked why I was starstruck, to which I replied, "There goes Wondermike\".
- Oh cool! this looks like a fun new podcast, it\'s on my \"must listen\" list.
What I learned from Schoolhouse Press ... that I don\'t need to follow a pattern, and that even simple color work gives stunning results (EZ\'s 3-1 colorwork). EZ\'s books freed me from \"pattern tyranny\" -- so much so that I love my patterns, but seldom follow them 100%. - What a great episode! Knitting royalty as a first guest -- not too shabby.
What I learned from Schoolhouse Press..... The Opinionated Knitter is one of the best books I have ever read. EZ\'s books are so genuine. What a gift to have this collection available for generations to come. Her books make me want to be a better knitter for my own enjoyment of the craft (not just the finished product). I know I can trust the content of anything from Schoolhouse Press and that\'s important. - I listened to your podcast while knitting on Coney Island this weekend. What a wonderful podcast! It inspired me to start reading the Elizabeth Z books I have and I\'m really enjoying myself. Haven\'t watched all the video yet but will do so soon. Keep up the great work, Mike!

- Great vid Michael. I must admit that I was, until recently, a Schoolhouse Press and EZ virgin. I of course had heard accolades about EZ and Meg for years but for some reason hadn\'t ever read any of their publications. That was until recently. I left the Men\'s Fall Knitting Retreat this year so inspired and fiber-refreshed. Many of the guys at the retreat talked about EZ and I knew that I had to experience her first-hand; at least via Knitting Workshop PBS special. After waiting for the video to be available at the library for a few weeks, I finally learned how wonderful Elizabeth was and what a fantastic legacy she left behind. I couldn\'t get enough of her. She definitely drew me in to her demos with her casual and honest style. My face actually hurt from smiling and giggling. I was actually saddened when I finished watching the DVDs knowing there weren\'t any more. I\'ve since read \"The Opinionated Knitter\" and have several of EZs other books on hold at the library and can\'t wait until they are available.
So I am proud to write that I am no longer an EZ Virgin and can\'t wait to try my first EZ-inspired project -- and maybe even one with steeking! - It\'s really hard to pinpoint one specific thing that I have learned from Schoolhouse Press. I have been following EZ from way back, and so much of her teaching has influenced everything that I do that it is hard to know where she leaves off and I begin! I think the most important thing is that I am not a blind follower. She has freed me from the strict confines of patterns and \'rules\'. I am so frustrated by others that are afraid to adjust a pattern, or that even need a pattern!
Watching Meg work on a sweater design, and how she handles any obstacles that come up with complete calmness reassures me that I don\'t have to be stumped when it doesn\'t work quite the way I expected, and that there is an easy solution to every problem. I can\'t imagine my knitting life without both of them. - Nice video supplement to the podcast, Michael! It\'s so helpful to SEE those increases rather than just hearing about them. Have you tried L-Linc and L-Rinc from Cat Bordhi\'s New Pathways book? I find those increases to be smooth, barless, and hole-less. I\'ve been using them in non-sock projects, as well. She has instructions in YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYOYMJBGxrw
The main way that I have learned from Schoolhouse Press is that I am in charge of my knitting. Their pattern construction has given me confidence to modify and customize patterns. Now that I\'m learning to spin, I think this knowledge will be even more helpful when I knit with handspun.
Looking forward to the next episode! - Excellent job with top notch production quality (as usual). So who\'s behind the camera when you\'re in front of it? Surely you can\'t be panning and zooming as you\'re talking (or can you?).
I enjoyed the introduction to the Bar None increase and Icelandic wool. It\'s similar to White Buffalo, except that it\'s 1 not 6 singles and more importantly it hasn\'t been discontinued. :)
Thanks for walking through the construction of the Moccasin sock. That pattern is a candidate for my queue.
Other things that popped into my mind while watching the video:
- I found myself leaning forward to get a better look at how you knit. I\'m a thrower so I like to see how Continental knitters do their thing to improve my skills.
- Hey, I have that mug!
- What was that TicketMaster ticket you pulled out of the Knitter\'s Almanac? Some sort of Live Nation event?
Looking forward to future installments, audio, video or otherwise. Thanks Mike! - I just discoverd fiber beat and I love it! EZ has rocked my world. I'm a non-conventional knitter. Taught by a number of different people I knit my own way and read my knitting better than I read a pattern. EZ is intelligent and teaches us to be brave. I\'ve knt the baby surprise jacket and the february baby sweater more times than I can remember. I made a gorgeous sweater using her percentage system for my growing son. I\'ve dabbled in other designs but mostly I take inspiration from her intelligence, wit and creativity!
