My introduction to Bohus Stickning or Bohus Knitting was through the beautiful book by Wendy Keele entitled Poems of Color from Interweave Press. In it, I learned about the Swedish design house created by Emma Jacobsson and her commitment to this vital cottage industry during World War II and after. But, what really took my breath away, were the extraordinary designs: painterly, impressionistic, architectural and perhaps most of all, stylish to this day. There were hats, gloves, scarves and sweaters that were knitted from custom-milled yarns of fine wools and angora bunny fiber. With names like Blue Shimmer, The Wild Apple, The Mists & The Swan, evoking images of the mystical, the magical and the mythological.

Wendy Keele's book contains re-workings of the original vintage Bohus patterns with heavier gauge yarns from contemporary manufacturers. I didn't truly understand the difference (between the vintage and newer updates) until I was able to see a true Bohus sweater in person. That opportunity, came during a Stitches West workshop with Susanna Hansson , focusing on the history of Bohus Stickning.

Today on fiber Beat, join me for a conversation with Susanna Hansson, tireless advocate and passionate chronicler of the history of these famously beautiful garments and the people who made them possible.

Susanna is a wonderful teacher and advocate for the Bohus Stickning tradition. If you have the chance to take a workshop with her, DO IT, you will NOT be disappointed. Check out the show notes for links to Susanna's workshop calendar and her original patterns. You'll also find links to Solsilke, where you can purchase kits to knit your very own Bohus work of art.

NOTE: As this interview is one from the archives, the exhibit at the Swedish American Museum is no longer showing.

  • Great show. I have really enjoyed getting caught up with all of the episodes. I love both wild apples and blue flower. I would probably wear blue flower more, so I guess that put it in the lead.
    thanks.

  • I just found your podcast! It's awesome. And I had never heard of Bohus- thanks for introducing me to it. I'll have to add some to my Ravelry queue. I think my favorite is the Guld- the colors are so bright and attractive to me.

  • I can't decide between New Azalea and Grey Mist - and they're both totally different. One is brilliant and vibrant, and the other is subtle. Can I pick two?

  • I like the Wild Apples too!

  • Thank you for another awesome podcast. I was lucky enough to attend Susanna's class at Madrona and that only makes my choice more difficult. I fell in love with many of the designs that day. Today, I think the Myrtle Green is my favorite for it's subtle color shifts and beautiful rhythmic bands.

  • Bohus Wild Apple is my favorite, although I also love the New Azalea Pullover. I really like the vibrant colors of both.

  • What a great episode! I had a good laugh at the beginning segment. It is so inspiring to hear about people who work so hard to carry on these traditions, otherwise they would be lost forever. I'll watch for Hansson's classes in the future. Thanks!

  • Thanks for another great show, Mike. I have to agree with you, the Wild Apple bohus has always been my favourite. The colours are just incredible, and I dream of being skilled enough to make one some day!

  • I checked out Solsilke, and it was Gothic Window, blue that caught my eye. And I used my Historical Linguistics Skills from my BA U.W. to get the message to give you a call :)))

  • I really like the Greenwood pattern. I have also always liked Wild Apples since I saw the Yarnharlot's version. Thanks for a great podcast.

  • My favorite bohus pattern is The Swan. I think it is elegant in it's simplicity. I'd like to take that bohus class at Stitches this year if I can get in. It has intrigued me for a while now. Thanks for the chance to enter.
