What is Fiber Beat? ~~
Fiber Beat is not your regular knitting podcast. In fact, it covers a range of crafts using the fiber medium, such as spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, shepherding, & crocheting. You can expect interviews with designers, authors, farmers, & businesses. WonderMike, editor-in-chief and intrepid reporter presents instructional video podcasts as well as product reviews. If you have a story, you'd like to share, give WonderMike a shout on Ravelry or leave a comment in the show notes!

Sponsoring Fiber Beat ~~
Fiber Beat is now accepting sponsorship. If you'd like to underwrite the show, please contact WonderMike who can give you rates and options.

Production Assistance ~~
Fiber Beat is a labor of journalistic love that requires considerable preparation, both before and after the actual interview. We use various audio/computer equipment to record, edit and publish each episode of the show. Your donations make this work possible. Thank you very much!!!

Fiber Beat #13, "OMG! it's BN & 3IG"

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

Bobbin's Nest Studio

This episode of Fiber Beat is underwritten by Bobbin's Nest Studio, from Santa Clara, CA. Bobbin's Nest is a fabric and yarn store specializing in: knitting, sewing, crochet, and hand embroidery. In 2011 they will be hosting Sharon McMahon of Three Irish Girls and other independent fiber artists for Stitches West in Santa Clara. Join them in February 2011 for this exciting event.

Happy Holidaze Everybody!!! As you start to the board the express train to Crazy Town, we'd like you to to take a small break and learn more about Bobbin's Nest Studio and Three Irish Girls. For this episode I sat down with Erin McGee from Bobbin's Nest and Sharon McMahon from Three Irish Girls.

The brain child of clever entrepreneur Erin McGee, Bobbin’s Nest is friend to the independent artist and dyer as well as their patrons and fans. I met Erin 2 years ago during the time that I was dreaming of what would become Fiber Beat. When I shared that vision with Erin, she said that she wanted to be our first sponsor. I’m so grateful for Erin’s initial and continued support of the podcast and so happy to have her as a guest on today’s episode.

Sharon McMahon is the creator of Three Irish Girls and is the color genius who was the darling of the 2009 Sock Summit “Dye for Glory” contest. I spoke with Sharon before her trunk show & workshop focusing on working with self-striping yarns.

The following people, places and things were mentioned:

Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 13

I have a skein of Three Irish Girls new yarn base Glenhaven Cashmerino in the color of your choice from the 2010 Lookbook. Here’s all you have to do to enter a chance to win: tell us your favorite color from the 2010 Lookbook. My favorite is McNamara featured on page 24. Now, it's your turn.

To enter, please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS December 31, 2010.

The winner of the Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 12 is Betsy. Her naturally dyed bounty is on its way to her home. Thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to Betsy. Thank you again to Earthues for the wonderful prizing.

A special solid gold thanks to Erin from Bobbin’s Nest for underwriting support and a gaelic “Go raibh maith agat” (pronounced: guh rev mah ah-gut) to Sharon for her colorful yarns and prizing for this episode. Thanks to you our charming listeners for downloading and listening to our first TWENTY episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Please have a safe and happy holiday!

Last, but not least, I’D LIKE TO THANK our many donors to the Fundraising/Technology Upgrade Effort. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has given so generously thus far.

  • I love them all! I wouldn't turn any of them down if I was the winner. If I must pick just one, I'll go with Riordan.

  • Oh I would love to win! My fave colorway is Brannagh. 2nd choice - Eaven. Both are gorgeous!

  • Mairin, Winter Birch, or Bryn -- I can't decide! I might have to go with Winter Birch, though, because it's a supremely skilled dyer that makes me think neutrals are interesting.

  • I love them all! I'm going to go with Elowen.

  • I really love the Eavan colorway from Three Irish Girls!! It is absolutely gorgeous...

  • There are few colorways of Sharon's that I don't love. I think today my favorite is Padraig! Tomorrow, well, who knows!

  • I scored some Brannagh & McNamara when Sharon was at The Yarn Spot in October. Somehow I missed the Heathered Lilac...

  • I really enjoyed the podcast! It is so very hard to choose just one but my favorite colorway is Brown Eyed Girl.

  • I love them all!!! Today my favorite is Burke.

  • Oh my! I have been trying for weeks to figure out my favorite color from the new lookbook. I have decided it is an impossible task. However, today I would have to say it is Burke.

  • Wow - hard to choose I adore Eavan but Enna is a close 2nd!

  • Love 3IG, love the Bobbins Nest and now I love Fiber Beat! My fav color is definitely Eaven. It is the most amazing blue.

  • Bryn! I can't even totally explain why, but it's so bright, vibrant and beautiful that I look at it and gasp. The lookbook is a gorgeous publication

  • My favorite color from the 2010 Lookbook is Flannery on page 8+9 although, it was really hard to pick! I'm kind of going through a solid/semi-solid phase at the moment because they make it easier to see lace patterns in socks.

  • I so enjoyed this show, it was my first one. I had to listen since you had Sharon on, her yarns are the best. It's just about impossible to choose a favorite colorway, I love them all. I'll say today it is burke. I need some sunshine in my winter today! I already have lots of the new colors on the way to me! :-)

  • Another great show! The lookbook is really nice, I'm torn between Enna (pp 44-45) and Brannagh (pp 4-5). They're both rich colors that I really love, but if I won I think I'd pick Enna.

  • I've wanted to try this yarn for some time. It's nearly impossible to pick a favorite, but I think I'll have to go with Enna.

  • Elowen...who could say no to a brighter complexion or a brighter mood!!

  • Great show! My favorite colorway from the Lookbook changes from day to day. Since I have to narrow it down to one, I'll choose Enna as my favorite.

  • This was a really interesting show. I've never tried Three Irish Girls although I've heard great things about this yarn. My favorite color from the look book (although I really loved them ALL) is Molly.

  • Thanks for another great show. I'm always pleased to hear from folks in the industry who seem so grounded and "real", and both Erin and Sharon give the impression of being truly lovely people.
It took some time to narrow down my favourite colour from the Lookbook, but I finally settled on Enna (p.44), as it seems to be so completely different from the purples I have worked with before.
