What is Fiber Beat? ~~
Fiber Beat is not your regular knitting podcast. In fact, it covers a range of crafts using the fiber medium, such as spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, shepherding, & crocheting. You can expect interviews with designers, authors, farmers, & businesses. WonderMike, editor-in-chief and intrepid reporter presents instructional video podcasts as well as product reviews. If you have a story, you'd like to share, give WonderMike a shout on Ravelry or leave a comment in the show notes!

Sponsoring Fiber Beat ~~
Fiber Beat is now accepting sponsorship. If you'd like to underwrite the show, please contact WonderMike who can give you rates and options.

Production Assistance ~~
Fiber Beat is a labor of journalistic love that requires considerable preparation, both before and after the actual interview. We use various audio/computer equipment to record, edit and publish each episode of the show. Your donations make this work possible. Thank you very much!!!

Episode 6: One Smart Cookie (featuring CookieA) Media Link: One Smart Cookie (28:58)

Fiber Beat Episode 6, "One Smart Cookie"

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

CookieA is the designer of dozens of sock patterns, including the iconic and wildly popular Monkey pattern. She co-blogs with Kristi Geraci at Knitter's Anonymous and teaches all over the world. This episode I talked with Cookie at Bobbin's Nest Studio on the occasion of her launch and book signing for "Sock Innovation" (Interweave Knits, 2009).

The following places, people and things were mentioned:

The WINNER of our fifth Fiber Beat CONTEST is Tina and she receives 1 bag (13 skeins) of Silky Merino along with the latest pattern book number 2 featuring designs by Melissa Leapman. These prizes have been generously donated by Malabrigo Yarns. A huge GRACIAS to everyone who entered the contest. We were OVERWHELMED with the enthusiasm for both shows (English & Spanish language versions) and, in particular, for this contest!!!!

Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 6

I have a signed copy of CookieA's "Sock Innovation" for this episode's contest. All you need to do is tell us your favorite innovator (can be any discipline, such as music, film, literature, painting, etc.).

To enter, please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS MARCH 21, 2010.

A MASSIVE thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first nine episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Let me know what you think and leave a review on iTunes!

A very special thanks to our actor: PunkRawkPurl.

  • One of my fave knitting innovator is Cat Bordhi. The way her knitting brain works boggles mine! Sock architectures, socks of two circs, and mobius cast on were all amazing to me.

  • My favorite innovator is Cat Bordhi-her sock architectures have really made me think about the parts and designing of knitted socks. CookieA is my favorite designer, and she\'s a really nice person.
    Great website, BTW.

  • Hey there! We saw you at Stitches West setting up for your drawing (we were the Steampunks having high tea and cookies across the aisle) and Cathleen asked you what you were doing. You were kind enough to tell her about this site.

Thank You! This page is great! Cathleen has been enthusing over your magic loop all afternoon!

When will you get to the Fabric! Only half of us use yarn. The rest of us sew!

Any chance we\'ll see you at Maker Fair?

  • I have to say Jess and Casey of Ravelry fame are among my favorite innovators. What they\'ve done to build a knitting community just boggles my mind. I also admire Eileen Fisher as a fashion innovator who makes stylish yet comfortable clothing for adult women--breaking the mold that the teenage form is the only fashionable one.
Would LOVE the Cookie A book, because she is truly another innovator I admire.
