Media Link: MFKR Photo Mantage (5:32) ![]() There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. For this video supplement, I've created a photo MAN-tage of images from the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat from 2008 & 2009 An original composition called "Long Live Happiness" from the band "A Night of Serious Drinking" was used for this video. The band is sadly no longer making music, but I still love this song, and their work in general, to pieces. I thought the lyrics were eerily appropriate for the photo mantage, so we've placed them in the video piece Performed by A Night of Serious Drinking: DON'T FORGET => The first ever Fiber Beat SCHOLARSHIP for Episode No. 10 / MFKR 2010 This year, the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat will be held just outside of Seattle in the City of Federal Way at the Dumas Bay Centre. We still have regular paid slots available with all the costing details on Ravelry and on Flickr. However, we are thrilled to announce have a special scholarship to the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat, provided by XRX, Inc. This scholarship includes full retreat fees plus a stipend of $400 for travel and transportation. You can nominate a friend, a family member or yourself. Please confirm that your person has agreed to be entered into the nomination process. A sample nomination will be the first entry in the comments section of the audio episode. One scholarship recipient will be selected from all the nominations by a panel of Men's Knitting Retreat coordinators (Joe Wilcox, Ted Myatt, James Herbison & myself). DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS August 6, 2010. A big manly thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first SEVENTEEN episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Let me know what you think and leave a review on iTunes! This Fiber Beat video supplement is dedicated to:

Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. You can now watch it at Vimeo or with the inline player below.
Fiber Beat Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal (Draw) from WonderMike on Vimeo. ![]() In the previous Fiber Beat audio episode 8, "PGR, In A New Way", Priscilla Gibson-Roberts talks about the horizontal draw, a description of arm movements while spinning. In her spinning technique book, "High Whorling", she makes a distinction between draw (what your arms do) such as long draw or short forward draw and draft (what your hands do) as in woolen vs. worsted drafting. In this Fiber Beat Video Supplement #8, I demonstrate the horizontal draw on a drop spindle. The fiber I'm using is A Verb for Keeping Warm baby camel/silk (50/50) in the "French Monk's Finest" colorway. My spindle is a PGR collapsible design, produced by Jorn Piel, available online from Paradise Fibers. PRESENTING: a new Fiber Beat CONTEST for this Video Supplement Episode No. 8. I have a signed copy of Priscilla's seminal spindle spinning text Spinning In the Old Way (Nomad Press) for this episode's contest. All you need to do is tell us why you were or are currently intimidated by spinning. What's stopping you from picking up a spindle and making your own couture yarn?! To enter, please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS July 4, 2010. Don't forget about the contest for Fiber Beat audio episode number 8, "PGR, In A New Way". Details on that contest can be found online and on Ravelry. A SUPERNOVA-SIZED thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first FOURTEEN episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Let me know what you think and leave a review on iTunes! We used snippets of the song below in this episode:
My name is WonderMike and I'll see YOU on the Fiber Beat.

Fiber Beat Video Supplement #4: Cookie's in the Nest from WonderMike on Vimeo. There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Welcome listeners and viewers to our fourth Video Supplement to Fiber Beat. This episode we feature a talk with CookieA. on the occasion of her book launch for "Sock Innovation" at Bobbin's Nest Studio. We talk about lace, masculinity and a take a look at some of her iconic sock designs. This footage marks my VERY FIRST hand held camera work, but fortunately Cookie's humor and professionalism make up for the shakiness and totally saves the day. The following items were mentioned and referenced in the Video Supplement:

Fiber Beat Video Supplement #3, The Magic Loop from WonderMike on Vimeo. ![]() There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Welcome new listeners and viewers to our next Video Supplement to Fiber Beat, Number 4. This episode we feature the unvention of Sarah Hauschka, The Magic Loop. This knitting technique allows one to work circularly on any size project whose circumference measurement is smaller than that of the total needle length. The bonuses are that you only use one long circular needle and you eliminate those pesky ladders that can form when using double pointed needles (DPNs). The following items were mentioned and referenced in the Video Supplement:
Don't forget about the Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 4 I have 1 bag (enough for a full sweater) of Zitron Unisono. It has been generously donated by Skacel Knitting for this episode's contest. Fiber Beat Video Supplement 2: Speed Swatch from WonderMike on Vimeo. ![]() There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Welcome listeners and viewers to our second Video Supplement to Fiber Beat. Once again we pushed the limits of our video editing software and hardware.
