What is Fiber Beat? ~~
Fiber Beat is not your regular knitting podcast. In fact, it covers a range of crafts using the fiber medium, such as spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, shepherding, & crocheting. You can expect interviews with designers, authors, farmers, & businesses. WonderMike, editor-in-chief and intrepid reporter presents instructional video podcasts as well as product reviews. If you have a story, you'd like to share, give WonderMike a shout on Ravelry or leave a comment in the show notes!

Sponsoring Fiber Beat ~~
Fiber Beat is now accepting sponsorship. If you'd like to underwrite the show, please contact WonderMike who can give you rates and options.

Production Assistance ~~
Fiber Beat is a labor of journalistic love that requires considerable preparation, both before and after the actual interview. We use various audio/computer equipment to record, edit and publish each episode of the show. Your donations make this work possible. Thank you very much!!!

Fiber Beat, Episode 22: "Ravel-ution" featuring Jess & Casey Forbes

Fiber Beat, Episode 22: Ravel-ution

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

Entangled Magazine - new sponsor

This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue Two featuring Wool & the Gang, Wooly Wormhead, and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio

I’d like you to stop for a moment and think about your fiber journey, passion, obsession, call it what you will. If you are a relatively new knitter such as me (I started in 2004), it’s hard to remember life Before Ravelry. How did we organize patterns, find errata support, show our finished projects to others & interact with our fellow fiber junkies?

It wasn’t until Ravelry, that we actually had a nice digital clubhouse to hang out in, get to know one another, learn about yarn, patterns & tools and share all that information with everyone. Ravelry’s ethos supports the underdog, the indie designer, the local yarn stores, the podcasts or a kid who’s just discovered knitting and wants to know MORE. All across the country and even across the globe users have found friends and fiber crafters online when they couldn’t find them in their own towns.

Today on Fiber Beat, I catch up with the founders & creators of Ravelry, Jess & Casey Forbes. We talk about the RavAdventure thus far and what the future might hold.

Ravelry is truly more than the sum of its parts: Jess’ inspiration, Casey’s innovation and the input of thousands upon thousands of users. These initial elements have combined to create something bigger, a social media phenomenon that is fun AND productive. This is NO facebook for knitters. Thank you Jess & Casey (and also Mary-Heather & Sarah) for this most wonderful gift of Ravelry. I really can’t thank you all enough!

The following people, places and things were mentioned:

Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 22

We've got a rare, out of production tote bag from Ravelry. It's the Fiber Animal Parade tote and it will not be made again (at least not in this fabric and by these folks)!

All you have to do to enter the drawing for this prize, is answer the following question: What is the thing you find most indispensable, the thing that you could NOT live without on Ravelry? My favorite tool is the user groups which enables Fiber Beat to interact with our listeners. . You can leave your answer on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. Winners will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS August 31, 2011.

A massively organized thank you to Jess & Casey for being on the Fiber Beat. Big shout out to new Fiber Beat sponsor, Entangled magazine. Finally, the most sociable media-tastic wave to all of you, our loyal listeners, for downloading and listening to our first TWENTY-NINE episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat! If you like what we do, please consider leaving a review on iTunes.
