What is Fiber Beat? ~~
Fiber Beat is not your regular knitting podcast. In fact, it covers a range of crafts using the fiber medium, such as spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, shepherding, & crocheting. You can expect interviews with designers, authors, farmers, & businesses. WonderMike, editor-in-chief and intrepid reporter presents instructional video podcasts as well as product reviews. If you have a story, you'd like to share, give WonderMike a shout on Ravelry or leave a comment in the show notes!

Sponsoring Fiber Beat ~~
Fiber Beat is now accepting sponsorship. If you'd like to underwrite the show, please contact WonderMike who can give you rates and options.

Production Assistance ~~
Fiber Beat is a labor of journalistic love that requires considerable preparation, both before and after the actual interview. We use various audio/computer equipment to record, edit and publish each episode of the show. Your donations make this work possible. Thank you very much!!!

Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

You can now watch it at Vimeo or with the inline player below.

Fiber Beat Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal (Draw) from WonderMike on Vimeo.

Fiber Beat Video Supplement 8: "Doing the Horizontal"

In the previous Fiber Beat audio episode 8, "PGR, In A New Way", Priscilla Gibson-Roberts talks about the horizontal draw, a description of arm movements while spinning. In her spinning technique book, "High Whorling", she makes a distinction between draw (what your arms do) such as long draw or short forward draw and draft (what your hands do) as in woolen vs. worsted drafting.

In this Fiber Beat Video Supplement #8, I demonstrate the horizontal draw on a drop spindle. The fiber I'm using is A Verb for Keeping Warm baby camel/silk (50/50) in the "French Monk's Finest" colorway. My spindle is a PGR collapsible design, produced by Jorn Piel, available online from Paradise Fibers.

PRESENTING: a new Fiber Beat CONTEST for this Video Supplement Episode No. 8. I have a signed copy of Priscilla's seminal spindle spinning text Spinning In the Old Way (Nomad Press) for this episode's contest. All you need to do is tell us why you were or are currently intimidated by spinning. What's stopping you from picking up a spindle and making your own couture yarn?!

To enter, please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS July 4, 2010.

Don't forget about the contest for Fiber Beat audio episode number 8, "PGR, In A New Way". Details on that contest can be found online and on Ravelry.

A SUPERNOVA-SIZED thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first FOURTEEN episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Let me know what you think and leave a review on iTunes!

Episode 8: PGR, In a New Way (featuring Priscilla Gibson-Roberts) Media Link: PGR, In a New Way (30:32)

Fiber Beat No. 8 "PGR, In a New Way"

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

Meeting your gurus can be a bit nerve-wracking, but in this case, it was more like a homecoming. This episode’s guest is truly an icon in the knitting and spinning world: Priscilla Gibson-Roberts. She has written books about traditional & historical sweater design, top-whorl spindle spinning and ethnic sock construction. In all that Priscilla produces, there is a love and respect for doing things “in the old way”. Fortunately, for us, she’s also interested in preserving their technical details and sharing them with future generations.

I spoke with Priscilla during breaks in her lecture schedule and my classes at Sock Summit 2009. We actually stayed until the lights went off, but I would have continued recording in total darkness had I been giving the chance. We, as crafters, artists and artisans, are indeed richer and more knowledgeable, thanks in large part to the work of PGR and Deb Robson (Nomad Press). I feel honored to have met them both.

The following places, people and things were mentioned:

The WINNER of our seventh Fiber Beat CONTEST is heknits and he receives a signed copy of Jacey's "Sit & Spin" dvd. Thanks to everyone who entered!

Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 8

We have a signed copy of “Simple Socks: Plain & Fancy” for one lucky winner. Here’s what we’d like for you to do: simply thank the person who got you started in the fiber arts. It can be anything you like: a phone call, a letter, cookies, crafts or a meditation. For example, I want to thank my MawMaw Ellen Ruth for showing me the path to fiber fulfillment. Since she's no longer with us, I'm offering this up to the cosmos for her to hear. Now, it's your turn.

You can leave us pictures, links, text or all of the above, but let us know that you did. To enter, please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS June 30, 2010.

A good old-fashioned serving of gratitude to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first THIRTEEN episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. You kids are the BOMB! Let me know what you think and please do leave a review on iTunes!

Special thanks to Priscilla Gibson-Roberts for her time and for all the years of hard-work and inspiration. I am indebted to Deb Robson of Nomad Press for the introduction to PGR and for the wonderful signed pieces for our contest prizing. A shout-out to our PGR vox pops: Susan, Karen & Jenne. Finally, thanks to Sharon (gerstperson) for the lovely photograph of Priscilla from Sock Summit 2009.
