Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. You can now watch it at Vimeo or with the inline player below.
Fiber Beat Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal (Draw) from WonderMike on Vimeo. ![]() In the previous Fiber Beat audio episode 8, "PGR, In A New Way", Priscilla Gibson-Roberts talks about the horizontal draw, a description of arm movements while spinning. In her spinning technique book, "High Whorling", she makes a distinction between draw (what your arms do) such as long draw or short forward draw and draft (what your hands do) as in woolen vs. worsted drafting. In this Fiber Beat Video Supplement #8, I demonstrate the horizontal draw on a drop spindle. The fiber I'm using is A Verb for Keeping Warm baby camel/silk (50/50) in the "French Monk's Finest" colorway. My spindle is a PGR collapsible design, produced by Jorn Piel, available online from Paradise Fibers. PRESENTING: a new Fiber Beat CONTEST for this Video Supplement Episode No. 8. I have a signed copy of Priscilla's seminal spindle spinning text Spinning In the Old Way (Nomad Press) for this episode's contest. All you need to do is tell us why you were or are currently intimidated by spinning. What's stopping you from picking up a spindle and making your own couture yarn?! To enter, please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS July 4, 2010. Don't forget about the contest for Fiber Beat audio episode number 8, "PGR, In A New Way". Details on that contest can be found online and on Ravelry. A SUPERNOVA-SIZED thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first FOURTEEN episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Let me know what you think and leave a review on iTunes! - Oh... my.. god.. It is possible to spin on a spindle. You\'re my hero! I have tried to not hate spindle spinning without success until trying the horizontal draw you demo in the video. (I have been totally happy on the wheel and miserable with a spindle.) This method gives me just enough time to get my hands and fiber organized and stay ahead of the twist. Amazing. I\'m converted - check out the difference: http://www.flickr.com/photos/puckdog/4804555433/ Loved the interview with PGR as well - what a charming and interesting person.
- Everyone makes spinning look so easy, they chat about types of wheels, types of fibre, types of yarn - Eeeeek I feel totally lost. They make spinning look so easy and fluid, oh and nobody tells you how to take the first step, I asked and was told but actually setting up the spindle scares me more than anything!!!
- Love your podcast a love this video! It's so nice to have a face to match up to the voice :) I am going to keep practicing my horizontal draw.
I have been spinning for almost two years and I love it, but am still intimidated by spinning a yarn that is a consistent thickness from the beginning to the end of the skein. - I bought my first spindle at MDSW in May but I have been too scared to try it yet. I will get one of my \"knitter girls\" (as my 4 year old calls my knitting group) to show me one day soon!
PS Love love love LOVE the fiber you are spinning. Must have! Might be a really good reason to finally figure it out! - I have to say, I\'m not intimidated. I\'m always willing to try something new. Although I have been knitting for about 2 years now, I do consider myself a beginner. There is so much to learn and so many mistakes to be made. I\'d like to learn to spin some day. But for now, I\'m focusing my spare time on knitting. Great show. Thanks.
- I love your podcast. Its my absolute favorite.
Reason i am still intimidated by spinning (even though i have books and even fiber) is I feel it will take me away from knitting. It will take so much time to knit enough yarn for a project, i may not be able to knit until 2013. Plus, it wont be of the quality of yarn done by professionals. I still want to find a clever spindle and give it a try. :)
thanks for putting together such fantastic episodes!
