What is Fiber Beat? ~~
Fiber Beat is not your regular knitting podcast. In fact, it covers a range of crafts using the fiber medium, such as spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, shepherding, & crocheting. You can expect interviews with designers, authors, farmers, & businesses. WonderMike, editor-in-chief and intrepid reporter presents instructional video podcasts as well as product reviews. If you have a story, you'd like to share, give WonderMike a shout on Ravelry or leave a comment in the show notes!

Sponsoring Fiber Beat ~~
Fiber Beat is now accepting sponsorship. If you'd like to underwrite the show, please contact WonderMike who can give you rates and options.

Production Assistance ~~
Fiber Beat is a labor of journalistic love that requires considerable preparation, both before and after the actual interview. We use various audio/computer equipment to record, edit and publish each episode of the show. Your donations make this work possible. Thank you very much!!!

Media Link: A Tweed Glows in Brooklyn (39:50)

Fiber Beat #9 "A Tweed Glows in Brooklyn"

There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin.

Jared Flood, better known to the knitting world as BrooklynTweed, is a much admired and sought-after designer, blogger, teacher & photographer. He truly is a one-man, A-to-Z fiber phenom. Jared can spin the yarn; he can design the garment; he can knit it up; and he can photograph it all to perfection, ready for glossy full-color fashion magazines. And, if you're lucky, you can have him show you how to did it. I have a secret suspicion that Jared has eliminated the need for sleep... or cloned himself. At least that's what my ego is hoping.

I spoke with Jared while he was on the Left Coast for a series of sold-out workshops in the Bay Area.

The following places, people and things were mentioned:

The WINNERS of our eighth Fiber Beat CONTESTS were as follows:

Thanks to everyone who facebooked, tweeted and shared all their fears and trepidations. Never fear. We'll get you ALL spinning!

Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 9

I have a signed copy of “Made in Brooklyn” for one lucky winner. Here’s all you have to do to enter: tell us the name of the photographer or photographers who have influenced your aesthetic, craft OR for whom you just FLIP! For example, I adore the work of Richard Avedon (fashion), Ron Fricke (film) and Julius Shulman (architecture). Now, it's your turn.

You can leave us pictures, links, text or all of the above, but please leave your comment on fiberbeat.com or on the Fiber Beat Ravelry forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS July 31, 2010.

A classically elegant thank you to everyone who downloaded and listened to the first FIFTEEN episodes (audio/video) of Fiber Beat. Let me know what you think and leave a review on iTunes!

As it happens, we're posting this episode on Jared's birthday, so Happy Birthday, Jared. Special thanks to Jared for his time and for his modern interpretations of the classics!

  • Jared's beautiful photography has definitely inspired me create better FO pixes. I'd say my most admired photographer is Ansel Adams. And thanks for the giveaway.

  • Another great Podcast, I will be listening to others as I knit along later. Thank You for bringing this great artist to your FIBER BEAT.

  • Jared Flood\'s knitting photography is simply the best. I like David Daniels for his cat photography (having a very photogenic cat must be a huge plus).

  • Certainly Jared Flood\'s photography of knitted objects has been a great influence. Drew Orrin-Brown is much of the reason I got into photography in the first place, and if you\'re in Kansas City you must check her work out.

  • I just discovered your podcast and I\'m in love! It is so much fun to listen to.

I\'d have to say that Dorothea Lange is one of my favorite photographers. She captured such raw and honest moments.

  • Currently I\'m really digging Diana Thorneycroft\'s art and photography, but I don\'t know how influential it is on my own creative output. Jared\'s photography is probably that which has influenced me, and something that I try to emulate when I have the chance (currently I am without a camera so no opportunities for photography.)

  • I love Eliot Porter\'s photography. Edward Weston is very inspiring as well. Nice blog..glad to have stumbled upon it.

  • One of my favorite photographers is Caroll Pearson. She\'s a personal friend and a phenomenal photographer. She\'s had shows in galleries in WI. Thanks for a terrific podcast.

  • Great podcast - very interesting. And happy birthday Jared!!

  • When I think of photography, I always think of Ansel Adams. I know that\'s pretty clique, but I just find his work so mesmerizing. But as for knitting blogs, the reason I became of fan of Jared Flood and Anne Hansen (Knitspot) is mostly because of the photography. Many times I\'ll just skim the words and then drool over the pictures!

    Great podcast!!!! Thanks!

  • Hooboy, do I ever identify with \\\"not having much to do in rural Oregon\\\". Most of the photography that I enjoy looking at are scenic works. The flicker user \\\"norvegiasara\\\" did a series of photos of the Faroe Islands that still blow me away.

  • Loved your most recent podcast with Jared. I have to say that my favorite photographers are still those people who were working during the depression....Dorothea Lange among them.

  • I listened to your podcast for the first time yesterday and confess that I then downloaded all of them and listened alllllll day. Each podcast is a work of art-- you\\\'ve got balance, creativity, excitement, interesting content, and you make me think as well as smile. Many thanks-- I\\\'m hooked.
